Fibre Optic Cabling
A fibre optic cable is an ideal way of providing a high speed backbone link between communication cabinets of the same network, situated in different locations as below:
- Linking a main server room to floor based comms cabinets with the same building
- Linking the main comms cabinet to a smaller sub cabinet for example in a warehouse
- Linking comms cabinets on the same floor that are installed to keep localised copper cabling under 90 metres
- Linking of two separate buildings belonging to the same tenant
The main benefit of a fibre optic backbone is it is the most effective means of transmitting data, covering the greatest distance with the most bandwidth, resulting in less cable and fewer repeaters and therefore less maintenance.
There are 4 main types of multi mode fibre, OM1, OM2. OM3 and OM4.
OM1 and OM2 are used for providing links up to 1 Gb which with today’s technology is too slow. OM3 and OM4 were developed to provide greater transmission speeds of 10, 40 and 100 Gb.
One single run of fibre can provide up to 24 links between locations, terminating onto a 19 inch rack mounted patch panel and presented as ST, SC or LC ports in each of the comms cabinets.
Fibre optic cables are not affected by electromagnetic radiation interference, therefore transmitting information with less noise disturbance.
